Stop Offshoring

With more recalls of toys made in China every week, senator Dick Durban, the number two Democrat in the Senate, called for the inspection of all toys imported from China.

I say, if they want to take that step, why not inspect all imported toys, regardless of where it originated? What makes you think China has a monopoly on defective toys? And when will this wake people up to other dangerous aspects of offshoring? Before the toy scare, there were stories of lost consumer data by Indian firms, dangerous knock-offs of prescription drugs, etc. Most of these stories were buried in the back pages because offshoring was considered the cool thing to do. Hopefully, this will cause people to think twice.

Comments:
I think the industry should start self-regulating, the way that electronics do via use of UL (Underwriters Laboratory). Not that the UL stops all problems, but it's definitely better than no regulation.
