Stop Offshoring

Here are two articles that talk about how the U.S. federal and state governments are offshoring some of their functions. There was some progress a couple of years ago by some states to restrict offshoring of government contracts, but not enough is being done. And with all the talk about national security, why does the government think it's OK to send jobs and data to foreign countries?

Just when I thought people were coming to their senses regarding offshoring, along comes this InfoWorld article that shows we're still as stupid as ever.

Here are a couple of discouraging quotes from the article:

“We’ll be retired before the full force of this really hits.” But our kids may find out later in their careers, he warned, that no job is sacred, and all work will eventually migrate to the place where it can be best done.

Offshoring is accelerating for application development, infrastructure, and support (I view those backsourcing stories as wishful thinking) ...

InfoWorld's Ephraim Schwartz wrote another nice article about the employment of foreign workers by U.S. companies, specifically the abuse of L-1 visas to bring workers into this country. The last paragraph sums up how I feel about the issue.

There are a lot of things wrong with this. But what bugs me the most are the statements made by our leading high-tech CEOs about the poor quality of American education and the fact that there aren’t enough U.S. workers to fill the jobs. All the while, these same CEOs bring in outside workers -- not because the education is so much better abroad, but because doing so benefits their own bottom lines.
